Relax in style

Relax in style

Sometimes you just need to take some time out to ‘shloomf’. And, if you’re going to do it, you may as well do it in style. Salt Rock-based Shloomfy owner Kirsty Allen is passionate about her business, and puts her heart and soul into every order.

Super comfy and ultra-trendy, Shloomfy memory foam bean bags seem to be taking the North Coast by storm. They bring an element of designer comfort to lounges, bedrooms, patios and offices, and Kirsty still gets excited about every order. “She does a little fist-pump or yells ‘woo-hoo’ every time we get an order in,” says her husband Chris.

Family life
While Kirsty handles most of the front-end elements of the business, from admin to managing orders and advertising, Chris helps out behind the scenes, building the foam pit, collecting fabrics and doing the odd local delivery.
And they do all of this while raising their three children, Luke (11), Julia (8) and Josh (2). “Chris and I met at Varsity College in Durban when I was 20. I remember seeing him arrive at Varsity in his old convertible yellow beetle and long surfer hair and I was such a ‘nerd’ that I never thought he would be interested in me! We were introduced through mutual friends one night and were married two years later.”

For the last 11 years Kirsty says her sole purpose was raising their children. She also ran play groups at their home during this time, while completing her post graduate certificate in education for foundation phase learners. Chris has been in the tiling industry for a number of years.
The couple built their Dunkirk Estate home eight years ago. “Chris and I are both from Umhlanga, but when we found Dunkirk we knew it was going to be the best place for us to raise our family.”
Both avid outdoor enthusiasts, Kirsty is a member of the Dolphin Coast Striders running club and Chris is a passionate surfski fisherman and they love the lifestyle they enjoy on the North Coast.

Business life

Kirsty and Chris took over the business from their close friends and, with their help and experience, have managed to grow it from strength to strength. The Shloomfy team is made up of Kirsty, Chris and their seamstress Junior. “Junior sews like the machine is an extension of his body. He does the complete manufacturing from start to finish and is about five foot, two inches of pure muscle and genius! He can also lift one of our large Shloomfys above his head . . . unbelievable!”
According to Chris, Kirsty is completely dedicated to the business. “The testimonials on our website are proof of how she puts her heart and soul into every order and manages the sale process from the time the order is placed to the point the Shloomfy arrives in the customer’s home or office. I have to drag her away from her computer just to spend some time with her.”

Because she is so passionate about what she does, Kirsty says quality and good service are some of the most important things to her. “We have never had a return in over three years. Our workmanship is of the highest level and we have strong relationships with our suppliers, using only top quality fabrics. There are loads of options in the bean bag market but we have a unique memory foam combination that provides a superior comfort and feel.”
