Food, glorious food
From authentic Mexican fare to gorgeous Greek delights – and even a French-inspired patisserie – you will pretty much be able to eat your way around the world in Ballito over the next few months. Inspired by the massive changes on the North Coast, including the recent opening of the Ballito Junction Regional Mall, many existing businesses have been prompted to upgrade and improve their offerings. But while good food has always been a big part of the North Coast lifestyle, and residents already have a wide variety of restaurants to choose from, Ballito Lifestyle Centre owner Bruce Rencken says they have taken a more family-friendly approach when planning their new-look centre, set to open in October.
According to Bruce, the revamp will see diners relaxing in a comfortable, sociable, alfresco-styled atmosphere in the section of the centre that has already been dubbed Ballito’s ‘Eat Street’.
Who doesn’t like good food in a great setting? And, apart from the introduction of some big-name, highly successful restaurants like Mythos, Lupa and Salsa, there is also a designated artisanal food market planned.
“The face of the North Coast has changed and we’ve had to evolve and move with the times. Food is a huge part of what we have to offer here, and we wanted to make our centre the go-to place for all things food-related, whether that’s at one of our restaurants, at our permanent food market or at Lifestyle SUPERSPAR or Woolworths.”
Other exciting arrivals include the opening of the popular French-styled patisserie, Chateau Gateaux, as well as Melissa’s, where the focus is on great coffee, confectionary, chocolates and jams.
‘Eat Street’ starts with the new Mythos currently being constructed in the area near Zaras and Beira Alta, and leads all the way up to the top where the old ‘big’ Wimpy used to be. The area will have café ‘vibe’ with outdoor tables and a relaxed, family environment. Here are some of the new faces on the block…
While they might be new to Ballito, Chateau Gateaux is certainly not new to the North Coast, or the country as a whole. This being their 20th year, Chateau Gateaux will open in August bringing with it their offering of decadent, indulgent treats. They store’s ‘take home’ section is very popular amongst busy moms looking for fresh, delicious treats and the elegant patisserie is great place to grab a coffee and enjoy one of their yummy cakes, tarts or other confectioneries.
Olé! Ballito is about to get its first taste of traditional Mexican fare with the opening of Salsa! But, apart from the authentic Mexican offerings, Salsa also offers a healthy, modern twist to some of their signature dishes – and the best part is that you can even create your own meal if you want to! This is definitely going to be a popular destination for a night out with the family – or even an adults’ night out, where you can taste some of their signature cocktails and custom range of craft tequilas (and even Margarita ice lollies!).
Promising a true taste of Italy, Lupa is named after the Roman wolf goddess. A modern-day osteria, Lupa is about enjoying good food in a comfortable, family-friendly setting. From traditional pizzas and pastas to shellfish, fresh fish, wood roasted chicken and veal, the restaurant uses top quality ingredients, including imported Italian flour and the finest mozzarella. There is also a bar area for pre or post dinner drinks.
Another first for Ballito is the arrival of an authentically Greek spot, Mythos. With key ingredients imported from Greece and traditional family recipes, there is no doubt that we are going to be impressed with this exciting Mediterranean eatery.
The very popular food and lifestyle brand, Melissa’s, is finally making its way to Ballito! Opening its doors in August, the restaurant and retail space will also be the first Melissa’s in KZN. Think home-style breakfasts, light meals and signature dishes from Melissa’s buffet table and artisan coffee. You can shop while you eat in the retails section, which features a range of food, homeware, hampers and gifts.
