Miss Ballito

Miss Ballito

Beautiful 19-year-old Brooke Haslam has been competing in pageants since she was 14 years old. She has always dreamed of wearing the title of Miss Ballito and now, the crown is finally hers.

true Ballito girl at heart, Brooke is a former Umhlali Prep and Ashton College pupil and is currently in her second year of university, studying corporate communication. She started modelling and competing in pageants from a young age and has won a number of titles during that time, including Miss Junior Teen SA, Africa Model, Miss Port Shepstone and Miss Spring Fever Teen. Her dream of becoming Miss Ballito came true when she was crowned at the gala evening at Meander Manor on 26 May.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO ENTER THE MISS BALLITO PAGEANT?
My passion has always been pageantry and all of these years I’ve sat in the audience watching the Miss Ballito finale. I promised myself that one day it would be me.

WAS THE EXPERIENCE WHAT YOU THOUGHT IT WOULD BE?
The experience exceeded my expectations. It was not as intense as I expected, it was way more fun and adventurous.

TELL US ABOUT THE CROWNING EVENING?
We were all so excited. The crowning evening took place at Meander Manor and we had our hair and makeup sponsored by Red Lip Studio. The evening went so smoothly and was really well organised. When I heard my name being announced as the winner I burst into tears. I was so surprised and so grateful. It was very special having my parents, my sponsor (Ocean Gorge) and my friends there to celebrate with me.

WHAT WERE SOME OF YOUR HIGHLIGHTS ON YOUR MISS BALLITO JOURNEY?
I loved doing the photoshoots with all the girls. We had a day where we were given a few inspirational talks which opened our eyes a bit and helped us remain positive through the competition. Learning some new skills at the shooting range was a real adventure and sourcing our own sponsors was challenging and helped teach us to be more independent. For my community work I visited and was able to spoil the people living at a frail care centre. It was such a rewarding experience.

WHERE TO FROM HERE IN TERMS OF YOUR MODELLING CAREER?
I’ve always wanted to enter Miss South Africa, a dream I hope to pursue in 2020…

TELL US FIVE THINGS CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT EVERY DAY?
My family, my pets, my car, chocolate and my cell phone!

WHAT ARE THREE RANDOM FACTS THAT PEOPLE MIGHT NOT KNOW ABOUT YOU?
I take the ‘L’ and the ‘R’ on my earphones pretty seriously.  I do not like mayonnaise. I love singing my version of opera to my brother.

WHAT IS YOUR ADVICE TO YOUNG GIRLS INTERESTED IN TAKING PART PAGEANTS AND ENTERING MISS BALLITO?
Remain positive even when things do go wrong. I’ve learnt that even when things don’t go as planned, they will eventually come right. Never question yourself – follow your instinct and just do it. Miss Ballito was a great experience. It made us all feel special and we all gained a lot of confidence from taking part in the pageant.
