Our July Wishlist
Nothing beats cuddling up on the couch with a good book…especially in winter! Here are three of our top picks for this month – CJ Box has written an edge-of-the-seat tale of suspense and vengeance in Vicious Circle. After his daughter was beaten and dumped by the side of a country road, Joe Pickett, determined to avenge her, confronts the notorious Cates clan…prepare to stay up all night with this one. Rob McCarthy’s A Handful of Ashes sees a woman blowing the whistle on her boss, a heart surgeon at a children’s hospital. She accused him of negligence, but at the enquiry, she is suspended as a troublemaker. And if you’re looking for something strange and a little creepy, pick up a copy of Where She Went by BE Jones. The story follows a TV journo who wakes up one morning in bed with a man she doesn’t remember and realises no one can see or hear her. Does this mean she’s dead? And has she woken up next to her murderer? There’s only one way to find out!
Soft winter skin
This winter we’re using MatsiMela’s Baobab Seed range. Known as the ‘tree of life’, the kernels of the Baobab fruit yield a rich, golden, scented oil traditionally used to protect women’s skin from the harsh African savannah environment. The oil has strong moisturising properties, and with Omega 3, 6 and 9 essential fatty acids, is great for preventing and curing dry skin. Gorgeous range … think Rooibos and honey, warm orange and ginger … yum. The bath soak is R75, the salt and sugar scrubs R85 each … really reasonable prices for a great local product! Limit the squinting
It may be winter, but that doesn’t mean the sun is any less bright. Execuspecs recommends wearing polarized sunglasses all year round to ensure the health of your eyes, and we agree! Here are some great reasons: squinting gives you wrinkles; UV light has harmful effects on your eyes (especially if you love being outdoors); tired eyes give you headaches; clearer vision fives you a faster reaction time; and seeing life through an Instagram-like filter is awesome! Get these polars, The Warren, at Execuspecs for R1290.

Cooler weather calls for comfort food and, of course, a fabulous red wine. This month sees the launch of the Neil Ellis Stellenbosch Caberenet Sauvignon 2014. The wine is a deep, dark garnet in colour with a bright ruby edge and boasts aromas of currants, blackberries and plums, followed by some black pepper spice. This full-bodied wine finishes with soft tannins and a hint of peppery cassis. Available at leading wine stores, R150. For more info go to: wwwneilellis.com
It’s all the rage on the playground and, believe it or not, it’s actually quite good for them! The fidget spinner not only takes kids away from screen time, but the three-pronged toy, with a ball bearing in the middle to enable it to spin, has other benefits too. No bigger than the palm of your hand, they are easy to use and are being marketed for their therapeutic value for ADD, anxiety and autism. And they also help with fine motor control, hand-eye coordination, muscle development in hands and fingers, and manual dexterity. You’ll find them at Toy Kingdom stores, starting at R79.
