Three wines for July

Honestly. Does our weather have a clue what it’s doing these day? Big chill, followed by mild winter days, followed by gorgeous, warm summer-like weather, and it’s back to big chill. Luckily, we’ve found a trio of great wines … so we’re sorted whatever the weather.

Rickety Bridge’s Foundation Stone is a range of Mediterranean-style blends, which winemaker Wynand Grobler particularly enjoys making – edgy, complex and full of promise.

First up’s the RICKETY BRIDGE FOUNDATION STONE ROSÉ 2017 … a dry, traditional-style Rosé with juicy red cherries and strawberries intermingled with Turkish Delight and a touch of spice. This is one to enjoy when the sun’s shining and the temperature’s rising. Great with salads, sushi, prawns and smoked salmon. Around R80.

When it’s a little cooler … and we’re longing for Asian-influenced roast chicken or duck, or maybe a goat’s cheese salad, we recommend the RICKETY BRIDGE FOUNDATION STONE WHITE 2016, a blended wine that has subtle hints of oak spice and a refined fruit. Approximately R100.

And when the chill sets it, the we’re going red. RICKETY BRIDGE FOUNDATION STONE RED 2014, to be precise. This wine is silky smooth and is all white pepper and blackcurrant, white chocolate and cherry tobacco, and is lovely with a rump steak with a creamy pepper sauce, or a rich venison dish.
