Dessert anyone?

Dessert anyone?

If you live on the North Coast and have a sweet tooth then you’ll be delighted to know that there are three decadent new dessert destinations right on your doorstep. We took it upon ourselves to pay them a visit…

Stacked Eatery

Freshly baked Belgian sweet waffles, “Jacks” aka flap jacks and in-store produced Gelato served in a trendy, hip and relaxed environment in the heart of Umhlanga Newtown. Stacked Eatery offers a comprehensive savoury menu as well as a continental breakfast offering and everything is made in store.

“We wanted to position ourselves in the “comfort foodie” segment of the market with a trendy, hip and relaxed environment. Where people can chill, relax and enjoy the friendly service and our yummy offerings which consist of sweet and savoury options with freshly baked Belgian waffles as the main carrier,” says co-owner Paul Wierenga.

The waffle and flap jack batters are made daily and the waffles are baked per order. Stacked Eatery have perfected their soft and light waffle batter and their must-tries include the Peppermint Aero Bar One and Cookie Crumble waffles. All waffles are served with two scoops of Gelato, with flavours like Double Fudge Brownie, Cookies and Cream, Caramel Crunchie and Nutella Nut. Other sweet options include cheesecake and hot fudge brownies, sundaes and their premium range of milkshakes.

Inspired by a trip aboard, where she was overwhelmed by the huge variety of ice cream options available, Eish Kream owner and founder Yaseera Essack Carrim launched her product in January this year. The delectable spaghetti-like Eish Kream is served in either a cup, sugar cone, taco, edible cups or in one of their ‘on-the-go’ boxes. Yaseera and her team work from a mobile food truck, which they take to special events. The ice cream is also available in a few select stores in and around Durban and Umhlanga, with additional stockists being added every week!

“When we set up at live events we always offer a fun selection of toppings, like marshmallows, heart wafers, fruit loops (because everybody wants to feel young again!) and a hint of candy,” says Yaseera. Their menu offers more than 10 different flavours, including Sweet Cream, Chocochino and Lime, with Bubblegum, Unicorn Tears and Charcoal being the most popular flavours. Made from organic milk and cream with a dash of natural flavouring, Eish Kream is a must-try for anyone wanting to take their taste buds on a journey!
Price: R40 per serving.

Plan B Dessertery has been dubbed as ‘heaven on earth for those with a sweet tooth’, and is particularly popular on social media sites like Instagram. Created by the founders of the popular Wakaberry and Four15 Burrito District franchises, Ken and Michelle Fourie and Michaela Mulvey, Plan B opened its doors in June this year.

“Our Plan A (Wakaberry) didn’t end quite the way we wanted it to. So, we came up with the idea of a dessert-only restaurant. After throwing around ideas for a name for our little dessertery for a few months we realised that the name had been under our noses the whole time. This was our Plan B,” says Micaela. Inspired by food-truck style desserts in the US, the team decided to create somewhat of a ‘stationary’ food truck serving desserts that you don’t need to sit down with a knife and fork to eat. Think churros, dessert tacos and the bubble waffle, which has turned out to be a huge hit. “It doesn’t taste anything like a regular, grid-styled waffle. It tastes more like a crispy-on-the-outside sponge cake.”

There are a wide range of toppings to choose from including the Bees Knees (vanilla ice cream, honeycomb and caramel sauce) and the Wimbledon (vanilla ice cream, meringue, cream, chocolate sauce and strawberries). The most popular, however, is the Chocoholic – double chocolate ice cream, Oreo chunks, chocolate and caramel sauce. Yummo!

Price range: R35 to R49.
