Peel to reveal… a new you!

Peel to reveal… a new you!

Spring is here and it’s time to freshen up your look! Sunny days mean less makeup, which in turn means your skin needs to be clean, clear and vibrant. Placecol Ballito aesthetic physician and general practitioner Dr Harisha Karpath says medical grade and chemical peels are a great way to achieve this.

Available in multiple forms, chemical peels are specifically designed to give your skin a smoother, firmer, healthier and more radiant look and feel. Having been used for centuries, chemical peels are among the simplest, most effective forms of treatment for blemishes, wrinkles, uneven pigmentation and acne.

“Changing seasons means changes in our skin too. For many people those changes require a revamped skincare ritual. Expertly administered chemical peels can help you literally slough off last season’s layer of dull skin, revealing a smooth, refreshed new look,” says Dr Karpath.

She says chemical peels typically require between one and three treatments for the best results – and there is limited downtime involved. “You may see results immediately or in just a few days.”

The choice of peel is all dependant on the condition of your skin. You may have either the mild Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA) or glycolic acid chemical peels, or the more intense Trichloroacetic acid (TCA) chemical peel.

“Milder AHA and glycolic acid peels are great for treating fine lines, inflammation, acne scars and sun damage. While not all clinics are able to offer them, as they need to be performed by a paramedical aesthetician, TCA peels penetrate deeper into your skin’s layers and are more effective in treating wrinkles, removing skin flaws like birthmarks and more severe acne scars, and help improve skin pigmentation.”

Dr Karpath says you can also boost your skin care ritual pre-and-post chemical peel by combining them with a comprehensive skincare treatment programme. These would include using Dermapen, Laser Skin Rejuvenation, customised facials and milder peels (from likes of Guinot, Dermalgogica, Nimue, Skinderm and Beaute Pacifique).

“The most important thing is that you have a thorough consultation with an aesthetic specialist who can work with a doctor to devise a skincare programme that works best for you.”
