Carry in style

Mom to a nine-month-old baby, and with another little one due in just a few months, Umdloti clothing merchandiser Sarah Putman knows all about the current fads in the baby world. Her new, super-edgy baby carrier range is perfectly on-trend.

When Sarah designed a funky carry cot for her little boy, Ford, she had no idea it would lead to her starting her own hand-crafted range of carriers.

Sarah, who has travelled the world sourcing fabrics throughout her close to 15 years in the clothing industry, says she was disappointed with the variety of carry cots available when she started decorating her son’s nursery.

“I was excited to start the nursery and create really special, trendy room for him, but was a bit disappointed by the lack of edgy, fun baby carriers available. I had seen amazing products on my overseas buying trips, but couldn’t find anything great locally,” says 34-year-old Sarah.

So, inspired and encouraged by her husband (who started his own tech company), Sarah used the experience as an opportunity to start her own side project, and express her creative side.

“As a full-time fashion merchandiser I have a good understanding of local manufacturing and a passion for locally-made products. I decided to play around, sourcing and digitally printing suitable fabrics, and hunting for the other materials I would need to put my first little showstopper together for my own little ‘delicious monster’.”

After seeing and loving Sarah’s original carry-cot, her friends started placing orders and soon she found herself adding different prints to her collection, which she named Delicious Monsters.

“It all happened by default. Just a little bit of fun that sparked the interest of other young moms around the country – and now internationally, with my first order being dispatched overseas! I wanted to break away from the status-quo and provide creations that are very different and fashionable.”

Sarah says young moms want to be trendy and in touch with fashion, and still feel confident and stylish when they are out with their babies.

“We all get tired of milling around in our pyjamas, covered in milk and drool. A fashionable carry cot helps ease the pain! I think that ‘adult’ prints appeal more to us millennials.”

The Delicious Monsters collection will soon include other baby and nursery accessories, as well as some new and exciting designs.
