Romantic travel

Planning a wedding can be stressful and lots of hard work. But there are rewards. Besides the obvious rewards of a magical wedding day and being married to the love of your life… a great honeymoon is always something to look forward to!

Whether you want to lie on a beach and relax or put on a backpack and explore, make sure you do your research before spending money on your dream honeymoon. We asked Wakatravel founder Maria Dorazio, who has been helping couples plan their honeymoons for over 18 years, for her top tips.

My first tip would be to get advice from an experienced travel consultant to make sure you find the most appropriate holiday destination and itinerary to suit you.

If you’re a honeymooner on a budget, consider trying destinations like in the Far East, like Thailand, Bali or Vietnam. You’ll get a combination of beach and culture, ‘a-la-cheap’!

After months of hard work and a massive wedding day party, some honeymooners may prefer not to travel too far. Mauritius, Seychelles and Zanzibar are all just a few hours away.

If you’re looking for something a little more unique, try some island hopping around Greece (and visit less well known but equally spectacular Ionian islands like Zakynthos or Kos in the Dodecanese).

If you’re lucky enough to have some extra zeroes in your travel budget, how about the exotic Maldives, which is on everyone’s bucket list, or perhaps a five-star Caribbean cruise?

Once you’ve settled on your destination, make sure all the little things are taken care of – transfers, tours, bookings for shows and spa treatments should all be arranged in advance.

Make sure you have all your documents ready (updated passports and the right visas). The last thing you want on your honeymoon is to be sharing a night of wedded bliss in an airport immigration holding cell!

My final tip would be to make sure your travel consultant arranges travel insurance.  It’s affordable and ensures peace of mind and a stress-free holiday from beginning to end.
