Top tips to help you host the best ever royal wedding screening party

Planning on throwing a smashing soirée to watch the upcoming nuptials between Prince Harry and Meghan Markle? Invite some Royal fans around, pop on the kettle and make the scones, and turn on the telly for a front row seat.

BBC Lifestyle (DStv channel 174) will show the live screening of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s big day … next Saturday 19 May from 10.15am.

From props and Pimms to flags and fascinators, here are some top tips for hosting a wedding screening party worthy of royalty.

Fabulous invites for your favourite lords and ladies: You may not have received one of the coveted VIP cards but that doesn’t mean you can’t make your own wedding watching party invites. There are tons of free downloads online for a ‘right royal knees up’ or simply design one yourself.

A dashing dress-code:
Set the mood by asking your honorary guests to go all out. Basic cocktail attire with a spot of English flair is always a win – from a Union Jack bowtie to fascinators in the hair, over-the-top hats are also encouraged – think Ascot meets Africa and feel free to add some local flavour with lots of colour and beads to complete your look.

Get a gigantic screen:
Consider hiring a projector to project the BBC Lifestyle live wedding stream onto the wall. Or go al fresco with an outdoor screening and a picnic style motif. Pack fun individual picnic baskets and arrange blankets and cushions on the lawn. Arrange mini British/ American flags to wave or go South African style and provide Vuvuzelas to blow when Prince Harry and Meghan have their first kiss.

Spot of tea, darling?
It’s not a British tea party if there’s no tea. Either serve copious cups of tea in every kind of flavour or get creative and dish out Pimms cocktails in dainty teacups.

Serve lush food:
Channel the lemon elderflower flavour royal wedding cake by serving homemade lemon cupcakes with Prince Harry and Meghan cut outs as cake toppers. Additionally, no English tea is complete sans delicate cucumber sandwiches. Add sponge cake, egg salad or salmon sandwiches, sausage rolls, chicken pies, jam scones and shortbread to the spread and you’ll have the catering side sorted. Alternatively bring the menu home with a traditional spit braai, and delicious koeksisters and Malva Pudding for dessert.

Play a royal drinking game: For example ‘drink if Prince George pouts’, ‘the first person to spot a feather fascinator’ or ‘if you spot the new royal baby’ are fun rules to add. What to drink. Please … Pimms or a G&T.
