Fancy a G & Tea Weekend? Such a treat…

Your choice, when you’re heading for the Cape Winelands, is huge. Loads of really gorgeous destinations tempt. But we’ve recently (and thankfully) discovered a new, utterly desirable, boutique option… The Light House Boutique Suites in Paarl. And to add to the attraction… G&T Weekends. Just. Pure. Bliss.

collaboration between The Light House Boutique Suites and Paarl’s award-winning distillery, Wilderer Gin, these weekends include a participative live distillation experience, enjoying three or four different gin cocktails, a scrumptious full afternoon tea and an informal light dinner.

But love gin as we do, it’s certainly not the only reason to book into The Light House.

The historic town of Paarl is just a hop, skip and jump away from Franschhoek and Stellenbosch, and a short 45-minute drive from Cape Town, so it really is an ideal base for those who’re wanting to explore the area.

Elegant, luxurious, comfortable, this guest house has just five creatively- themed and seriously well-appointed suites – perfect if there’s a small group of you travelling together.

The guest house is run by two designers – the hugely talented and oh-so-likable Darryl and Hendrik . . . who add exceptional experiences and special touches that take this spot from a-place-to-stay to OMG-I-want-to-live-here-forever. The towels are fluffier, the bedtime water-and-chocolates more stylish, the afternoon teas tastier…just extraordinary. For someone with no formal training, Hendrik, together with his lovely team, dishes up the most perfect breakfasts imaginable … and although they don’t offer dinners as a matter of course, we’d advise you to beg … it’s worth grovelling! If you’re there for a while, there are many excellent restaurants in the area.

For golfers, nearby courses include Pearl Valley at Val de Vie Estate (an award-winning Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course) and the Paarl Golf Club at the Boschenmeer Golf Estate.

Those who aren’t heading out with clubs, can spend a lazy day on the sun terrace, with a dip in the swimming pool if the sun’s out; for those with more energy, there’s biking, trail hiking and horse riding.

And then there’s everything wonderful to discover in the area . . . the wine farms, obviously, as well as family outings like Butterfly World (the largest butterfly sanctuary in Africa and a magical experience for children and adults), the Crocodile Park and Lion Park, the Heritage Trail, with fascinating architectural details. Besides enjoying the wine route, a visit to Spice Route and Fairview Cheese is hugely recommended, as is a wine tasting at Avondale and dinner at the incredible Faber restaurant.

The Light House can sleep up to 10 guests, with children over 12 years welcome, but if you book exclusive use of the villa children of all ages are welcome. There are gin weekends planned for September (dependent on a minimum booking of three rooms or six people).
