The Beast’s abode

The Beast’s abode

Popular Sharks and Springbok rugby player Tendai Beast Mtawarira spends a fair amount of time away from home travelling with his teams. His beautiful Brettenwood home provides the perfect, serene escape from the busyness of life for this sportsman and his lovely family.

Aroom dedicated to sporting memorabilia, a quiet reading corner and a giant colourful map on the wall of the playroom . . . these are amongst the many unique elements in the Mtawarira home that speak to their lifestyle and the things that are important to them.

With highly experienced interior designer Schané Anderson of Olala Interiors and talented architect Tracy Levinson of LevEco Architects at the helm, this contemporary, family home was always going to a show stopper, and a sanctuary for Tendai, his wife Kuziva and their children, Talumba and Wangu.

One of the most loved rooms in the triple storey home is the chidren’s playroom. Because their dad spends so much time away from home, Kuziva (or Ku as she’s affectionately known) asked the design team to incorporate a map into the kids’ playroom so she could show them where he is in the world at any given time.

As you make your way through the modern, open home, you cannot help but notice the stunning, Molecule Chandelier hanging above the solid walnut dining table. This, combined with the Clinton Friedman silkscreens (artist’s proofs), which Schané says were love at first sight for Tendai and Ku, create a sophisticated, retrospective ambience in the space.

According to Schané, the Legendary Land Carlucci contemporary bold damask print on the scatter cushions was the starting point for the lounge, which also features opulent Zoffany wallpaper.

The guest toilet is a breathtaking show stopper featuring exquisite, bold Osborne & Little Fantasque wallpaper and hanging glass pendants.

Who wouldn’t want to unwind in a bathroom like this? There are mirrored panel walls behind the massive master bath (leading to the mirrored dressing room), which create a romantic deco feel and beautiful light reflections.

The plush master bedroom features dramatic Romo Bitter Chocolate and Marquise large scale diamond wallpaper inspired by traditional weaving processes.
